Why We Grow Ginseng in Wisconsin

January 30, 2026Joe Heil

Wisconsin is where our family farms, and where we grow every root we sell. For us, its ginseng story is tied to the gardens, the people who tend them and a community that has spent years learning how to grow this crop.

A crop that rewards years of attention

We harvest three-, four- and five-year American ginseng. Each crop stays in the ground through several seasons, with shade and attention to plant health along the way. Our five-year roots are our most premium selection.

Growers and researchers learn together

Our work with Michigan State University researchers focuses on plant health and cultivation. Wisconsin’s ginseng community also shares in research that helps growers care for a demanding crop. Read about that work.

The place on the label matters

“American ginseng” names the species. “Wisconsin-grown” tells you where it grew. We grow all our own ginseng here and never blend it with roots grown in Canada or Asia. You can find Heil in the Ginseng Board of Wisconsin’s supplier directory.
