Buy American ginseng root from the farm that grew it

Every dried and fresh ginseng root on this page was grown, dug and dried by our family in Edgar, Wisconsin, where we have been farming since 1953. We sell only what we grow and never blend in ginseng from Canada or Asia. If you are looking for Wisconsin ginseng root for sale, you are buying straight from the grower. Meet the Heil family farm.

Choose dried ginseng root by age

A root's age is the number of seasons it spent in our shade gardens before harvest.

  • 3-year root: our smallest whole root and the lowest price per pound of the three ages. The everyday choice for tea, soup and congee.
  • 4-year root: larger roots, between the other two in size and price.
  • 5-year root: our oldest, largest roots, sorted for presentation and our first pick for a gift.
  • Blemish Mix: sound roots with surface marks, sold by weight in 5 lb and 10 lb bags at our lowest price per pound.

Age is hard to judge by eye, so go by what the grower states. Compare 3, 4 and 5-year roots side by side.

Fresh or dried ginseng root

Fresh roots are dug in fall and sold from September to mid-January, shipped with 1-day delivery. They are mostly water: about three pounds of fresh root dry down to one pound of dried, so compare fresh with fresh. How we grow, dry and grade our roots

Our ginseng grows three to five seasons under shade cloth that copies the forest floor, weeded and mulched through each summer. After harvest we clean and dry every root on our own farm, then sort by age and appearance. Every bag carries a harvest-lot code that links it to our records.

Buying real Wisconsin ginseng

"American ginseng" names the plant, not the place, and it is also farmed outside the United States. When you shop, ask where the roots were grown and dried, how old they are and whether the bag has a lot code. How to tell real Wisconsin ginseng.
