Three-, Four- or Five-Year Ginseng: Which Should You Choose?

Updated September 30, 2026

Five-year roots are our most premium choice and our first pick for a gift. Three-year roots are our most affordable whole root for everyday tea and soup. Four-year roots sit in between. The age is the number of growing seasons a root spent in the ground on our family farm in Edgar, Wisconsin, before harvest.

What the extra years mean on the farm

Cultivated American ginseng grows under shade cloth that copies the forest floor. Each season the beds are weeded, mulched and watched through the summer, and the plants die back in the fall and come up again in spring. A garden kept for five seasons takes two more years of that work than a three-year garden, and some plants are lost each year along the way. That is the main reason older roots cost more.

After harvest we clean and dry the roots on our own farm, then sort them by age. Every bag carries a harvest-lot code that links it to our records.

For a gift, start with five-year roots

Five-year roots have spent five growing seasons in the soil and are carefully sorted for presentation. We recommend them when you want to give our most premium whole-root selection. Choose 8 oz or 1 lb for one person, or a 5 lb or 10 lb order to share. Those larger orders ship as our regular 1 lb bags, so they are easy to divide among family. More ideas in our gift guide.

For your own kitchen, three- and four-year roots

If the roots are going into a pot of soup or a pot of tea, three- and four-year roots give you more ginseng for the money. Both come in the same four sizes. If you cook with ginseng every week, a 5 lb or 10 lb order brings the price per pound down the most. Read our bulk buying guide.

Can you tell a root's age just by looking?

Not reliably. Roots of the same age can look quite different, and size, wrinkles and branching overlap between ages. Older roots often show more fine rings around the neck, but that is a hint, not proof. Rely on the age stated by the grower. We sell by weight, so two bags of the same weight may hold different numbers of roots.

Does older mean more ginsenosides?

Growing time can affect ginsenosides, the natural compounds in ginseng, and so do growing conditions. Age alone cannot tell you the amount in a particular root or bag. A study of American ginseng looked at how age and growing conditions affected those compounds.

Where Blemish Mix fits

Blemish Mix contains sound roots with cosmetic scars or wrinkles that we sort out of our graded roots. It can include all three ages, with no fixed blend, and it is our lowest price per pound. It is a practical choice for everyday tea and cooking when looks matter less. See Blemish Mix.

Common questions

What is the difference between 3, 4 and 5-year ginseng?

The number of growing seasons before harvest. Five-year roots are our most premium and our first pick for gifts, three-year roots are our most affordable whole root, and four-year roots sit in between.

Which age is best for soup?

Any of them. For the pot, three-year root or Blemish Mix gives you the most ginseng for your money. Five-year root is the one to save for gifts.

Which age is best as a gift?

Our five-year roots. They are our oldest roots and are sorted for presentation.

Do you sell six-year or older roots?

Not at this time. Our whole roots are three, four and five years old.

How do I know the age on the bag is right?

We grow every root we sell and sell each age on its own. The harvest-lot code on each bag links it to our records, so we can look into any question about an order.
