Where to Buy American Ginseng
Last updated October 26, 2026
You can buy American ginseng from the farm that grew it, from an online store, from a marketplace, or from a grocery or herb shop. Whichever you choose, ask where the ginseng was grown and dried, how old the roots are, how much the bag weighs, and what it costs per pound. Heil Ginseng sells direct from our family farm in Edgar, Wisconsin. The Heil family has farmed and grown ginseng here since 1953, across four generations. Every root we sell was grown by us, and every bag shows its net weight and a harvest-lot code.
Where people buy American ginseng
| Where | Good for | Ask or check |
|---|---|---|
| Straight from a farm | Knowing who grew it. Choosing the root age. Buying by the pound. | Where the roots were grown and dried. Net weight. A lot code. Return policy. |
| An online store that is not a farm | Browsing many brands in one cart. | Is the origin stated for each product? Is the weight the bag weight or the shipping weight? |
| A marketplace | Fast checkout and reviews. | Who is the actual seller? Does the listing say where the ginseng was grown? Compare price per pound, not price per bag. |
| A grocery or herb shop | Seeing the product, small amounts, same-day pickup. | Read the label for origin. Stock and age vary by store and season, so call first. |
Six questions to ask before you pay
- Where was it grown, and where was it dried? "American ginseng" names the plant, not the place. It is also farmed outside the United States.
- How old are the roots? A root's age is the number of seasons it grew before harvest. Go by what the grower states, because age is hard to judge by eye. See our root age guide.
- What is the net weight? Compare price per pound. Multiply an 8 oz price by two.
- Is there a lot code? A code lets the seller trace a bag back to its harvest.
- Is it one ingredient? Roots, slices and tea bags should list ginseng root only.
- What is the return policy? Ours is a 30-day money-back guarantee, conditions apply.

Buying in a store instead
Many people look for ginseng at Costco, Walmart, Whole Foods or an Asian grocery. What each store carries changes by location and season, so we cannot tell you what is on a shelf near you. If you buy in a store, read the label for the country where the ginseng was grown, the net weight, and whether the ingredient list is root only. Then compare the price per pound with the table above.
