Whole-root details

Origin, order size, preparation, and storage.

Dried 3-year American ginseng whole root, grown by the Heil family in Wisconsin. This is the youngest whole root we offer, sold by net weight, with the lowest price per pound of our three whole-root ages. It is the everyday choice for tea, soup and congee.

What you receive

Choose 8 oz, 1 lb, 5 lb, or 10 lb. The weight selected at checkout is the weight that ships.

What the age means

3-year describes cultivation time. Root shape, size, color, crown, and branching vary naturally, and appearance can overlap between ages.

How to use it

Dried whole roots are very hard, so slice with care. Steam the root for 10 to 15 minutes until it softens, then slice it thin with a sharp knife while it is still warm. Add thin slices to hot water, soup, broth, or congee and adjust the amount and time to taste. All three dried-root ages can be prepared for tea.

How the roots are dried

After harvest we clean and dry the roots on our own farm, then sort them by age. Every bag has a harvest-lot code that matches our records.

Compare root ages

Read the root age guide or compare every dried whole ginseng root option. See today's price per pound by age and bag size, or bulk 5 lb and 10 lb orders.

Storage

Keep the roots sealed in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight.

Safety: Ask a qualified healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a health condition.

Grown by the Heil family

All the ginseng in this product is grown by us in Wisconsin. We never blend it with ginseng grown in Canada or Asia. Our harvest-lot records connect customer orders to the crop.

Ginseng, 16 oz, 3-year-old. I am very impressed with this product. As a retired service member, I have served for many years in the orient, have tasted ginseng for many years and find the Heil Harvest of very high quality. I will definitely buy from this company again.

Wonderful ginseng! I am a qualified reviewer having used ginseng for more than 40 years, in my mid 70s presently. Strong, layered ginseng that peels off pleasantly in your mouth (how I do it, throw in my mouth, and lets it soak). Wakes you up, and gives you strength!
I'm always unsure about buying ginseng, and I love buying it from the grower! Especially who also lives in Wisconsin!
Thanks for growing this, I'm sure I will reorder!!

Whole-root questions

How to choose, prepare and store your roots.
Which age should I choose, 3-year, 4-year or 5-year?

The age is how many seasons the roots grew before harvest. The 5-year roots are our most premium selection and our first recommendation for a gift. The 3-year and 4-year roots also work well for tea and cooking, at a lower price per pound. Roots of different ages can look alike, so rely on the age stated by the grower. Compare the ages.

How is the root dried?

After harvest we clean and dry the roots on our own farm, then sort them by age. Every bag has a harvest-lot code that matches our records.

How do I slice a dried whole root?

Whole dried roots are very hard. Steam the root for 10 to 15 minutes until it softens, then slice it thin with a sharp knife on a stable cutting surface while it is still warm. Spread the slices out to dry before you store them sealed. If you would rather skip this step, buy ready-cut ginseng slices.

How should I store dried ginseng root?

Keep the roots sealed in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight.

What sizes are available, and will every root look the same?

Choose 8 oz, 1 lb, 5 lb or 10 lb. Larger orders come in individual 1 lb bags. Roots vary naturally in size, branching, color, and surface markings.
