Whole-root details

Origin, order size, preparation, and storage.

Five years in Wisconsin soil. Our five-year whole roots are our most premium selection, grown by the Heil family and carefully sorted for presentation. They are our first recommendation for a ginseng gift.

What you receive

Choose 8 oz, 1 lb, 5 lb, or 10 lb. The weight selected at checkout is the weight that ships.

What the age means

5-year describes cultivation time. Root shape, size, color, crown, and branching vary naturally, and appearance can overlap between ages.

How to use it

Carefully slice the dried root before steeping or cooking. Add thin slices to hot water, soup, broth, or congee and adjust the amount and time to taste.

I have purchased lots of ginseng in various forms since I was in my early teens after reading about the health benefits and energy that it provides for the body. I am married to a Chinese woman who understands the benefits and value that ginseng provides the body. Ginseng has been used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine. It’s touted as a plant that can help with many different functions in the body. I’m intimately familiar with the plant and how it grows because I attempted to cultivate it on my property in upstate New York and spent a lot of money on both ginseng seeds and roots of various ages that ended in failure. I have never in my lifetime seen such large and beautiful ginseng roots as what I received today from Heil harvest. And I paid for 16 OZs and received over 18.5 OZs. I couldn’t wait to wash off a root and taste the flavor and texture of the fresh root. It didn’t have the usual bitter taste of the dehydrated roots that I’m accustomed to buying that I have to rehydrate in order to chew the root. I find that chewing the root is the best way to get the full benefit of the plant through the receptors in the mouth and under the tongue where it can get into the bloodstream quickly and efficiently. I’m truly impressed with the quality and quantity of roots that I got from the amount of money I spent. I’m going to make a big pot of chicken soup today with a ginseng root. I highly recommend this product and the people who are selling it! I’ll be purchasing more ginseng roots in the future for sure!

The American ginseng has a rich, natural aroma and a very authentic taste. It’s quite firm and hard to cut when dry, but I actually think that’s a good sign of its quality. Overall, I’m very happy with it—the flavor is excellent and the quality feels great. Highly recommend!

I purchased the 5-Year bag and am very pleased with the quality. The roots are well-formed and nicely packaged, with a natural ginseng aroma and a mild, slightly bitter taste when brewed. Overall, it seems fresh and high quality, and it’s convenient to use for making tea

5 year ginseng. it seemed to be good quaality, however is absolutely impossible to cut, even after soaking for 3 hours. 2 stars because your company has never once responded to my enquiries on your web page platform. i have enquired some 4 different times.

I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect but the roots and the tea taste pleasantly earthy and truly pack an energy punch without the caffeine. The tea bags as super easy (though I would suggest a longer string for bigger mugs). Because the whole root is so dry and hard, I usually soak it and then cut it once soft, which happens more quickly than I’d guess (a few hours/half a day?). Now I’m excited to using it in new ways!

Great tasting, fresh ginsing. I haven't tried local growers before because I was unsure how authentic the product would be. I'm very pleased with this product which is high quality.

We bought 10 lb of the 5 year old ginseng root to give out as gifts from Heil, since this is the best deal among all the websites on the Ginseng Board of Wisconsin (I literally checked store by store at that time). The roots were beyond our expectations. They are big, thick, and very wrinkled (which I read means they were nicely dried). But what surprised me even more was their customer service. Due to two consecutive major storms here in Hawaii, shipping was significantly delayed, and I was concerned about not receiving them before our flight. They responded promptly to resolve the issues perfectly. Thank you very much, Colton and the team. And yes, I will shop here again.
